Question about Campaigning

I had a thought. If I were making a campaign and I had A sidequest, could the reward be something like increased unit hp, damage, or armor on subsequent maps.
The question being is a reward like that possible to.be written to script or whatever format it may take on.
Also, if I'm doing a campaign on a particular level can I make A proverbial fork in the road that affects only the units used on future levels without rewriting the whole campaign with two divergent maps?
 
I'm not 100% sure if I understand you but if you did a fork in the road and depending on which way you go the entire campaign would change, then you would need to create two entirely separate campaign unless you somehow do some godly triggering with the game cach and (sorry, I kind of lost my train of thought here...)
