I never liked the planet models available here on the hive, so i decided to make my own set. This is supposed to be a generic volcanic planet, and it has a pretty cool feature where the lava is luminent, and also glows visibly on the shadowed side of the planet, regardless of where the shadow is directed. This only shows in-game though.
To add a sense of depth, these planets have a modeled shadow effect tied to the head bone. This means you can control the orientation of the shadow by locking the "head" body part facing towards your star/light source, and the planets back will be shaded! If you also script your planets to orbit around the star, you will get a really cool effect. If the planet is static, you can ofcourse just adjust its facing instead.
