Path of the Shaman

Overview

Path of the Shaman (PotS) is open world but story driven single player RPG that contains many familiar aspects, but with focus on the immersion.
The main character of the story is orc shaman called Nazgrek.
While inspired by Warcraft's universe, the story, locations, and characters in Path of the Shaman are fictional and non-canonical to Warcraft's timeline.

Map size: 480x480

Development background
The map has been under slow and steady development since... 2008 I think? Most of the work has been done recently over few years.
As of now (11/2025), the map layout is mostly complete for all dungeons and zones, but there is a lot of work still in terms of terraining. I was held back many times by the limitations of the World Editor and the game engine, as I hit first doodad limit of 6000 or something. When Blizzard finally increased the limit to 30000, I got activated myself from deep slumber and started to work on the map more seriously.
Overall, countless hours, days, years have been put to the development to make the feel game unique in WC3 map-sense but feel familiar from RPG-style perspective.

Death and resurrection
Player and AI companion heroes will be resurrected at the selected graveyard.
  • Graveyards can be found in multiple locations
  • Usually there is 1 graveyard per zone
  • The player may choose the current graveyard by walking on the center of the graveyard.
  • The selection of the current graveyard is visually indicated
  • Companions will resurrect at the selected graveyard, but not if they are not in companion group
Spirit healer appear briefly at the graveyard when Hero is resurrected and may return the items the Hero has lost upon death, but at the cost of Resurrection Sickness, which greatly reduces the Hero's combat capabilities for some period of time.

Zones:
The map is divided into multiple zones and subzones. Each zone have different type and level of units. The environment plays huge role in what kind of creatures and objects are within the zone. The zones have general level suggestion, but it does not mean that they decrepit as the player hero outlevels them. Crafting, dungeon and quests related objectives remain deeply necessary despite higher player hero levels. Leveling can also be continued until max level anywhere, but the rewards in terms of e.g., item drops and experience are lower.

Note: Zones, subzones and dungeons are subject to change.

You may tame beast to be as your pet. Shadowclaw (wolf) is initially your first pet.
Different beasts have different attribute weights, e.g., wolf having more dodge and crit while bear has more health, armor, and block chance.
The pets can be leveled and they are independent of player Hero's level.
Each time pet levels up, its stats are increased.

The environment is dynamic with long day-night cycle.
Random snow events, that are common on certain areas; snowy environment will affect all nearby units with cold which will slightly slow down movement attack speed. If the unit is affected by cold for extended period of time, it will get Frostbite which will reduce armor and negatively impact health regeneration. Frostbite can be removed by going near camp fire or going inside a tent.

Dynamic Minimap
The minimap is more RPG-like and high quality and bound to smaller section of the map.
There is also "enlarge" function to bring the map to the center of the screen for better view, e.g., searching quest giver, objective, etc.

Sounds
  • Most units will have combat sounds when attacked or attacking.
  • Wounded combat sounds for player hero and some units

FAQ
At the moment I work alone, but if there are people interested in joining the project, I'm more than happy to discuss.
To be honest, creating a huge RPG map alone is a lot of work, and progress is thus slow.

Most needed help could be needed at:
  • Overall gameplay testing and finding bugs / providing improvements
  • Function or section focused testing
  • ...
This is what I at some point desired much (co-op mode where Nazgrek and Zul'kis be played by either 1 player or 2 players), but unfortunately the map has many systems that I already made with only 1 player in mind, so I had to make decision to scrap multiplayer possibility.
Thought, I tried making most of my newer systems work for more than 1 player if I ever want to try that route again.
I tried conversion to LUA, but i had way too many issues in the conversion (e.g., converting all of my own and some other people's systems to LUA) and trying to troubleshoot was a nightmare. I also love the typechecking/syntax of JASS more and thus feel its more fool-proof for people like me.
This is what the map initially was; a campaign - back in 2006-2008 era when I started creating the map, but at the time I lacked the knowledge to do those map transitions/saving items and whatever properly.
I also converted the campaign into map, when I started making the map for multiplayer.
Send me message if your name is missing for the used resource. Foolishly I didn't keep track of all credits from the beginning of the developement.
I'm backtracking all the used resources to update credits list.

Thanks! My initial idea at some point was to re-create WoW classic as multiplayer in WC3, but I quickly scrapped that idea and went ahead with more "simple" approach. I love the WoW classic vibe, I want to bring that with this map.

I am mostly sticking updating the #1 post - but short update about making dynamic minimap for "PotS"
  • Basically, with this new system i can have the minimap more RPG-like and high quality (screenshot from World Editor "view entire map").
  • I also added "enlarge" function to bring the map to the center of the screen for better view
I think this dynamic minimap could be useful as resource in Spells -section - but I probably have to make some adjustments...

My workflow (might differ depending on minimap customization needs):
1. I took screenshot of the map (View entire map)
2. Resized to 2024x2024 (doesnt matter what size as long as square)
3. Upscaled to 8096x8096 using Upscayal AI (upscayl_2x_high-fidelity-4x)
4. Use minimap_texture_chunker.py to split into 256x256 chunks (Python script - other methods can be used as well...)
5. Batch Converted PNGs to BLP using BLPLab
6. Imported BLPs into map in war3mapImported\
7. Import / add JASS " DynamicMinimap.j " library into map
8. Ready for use

I shortly explain/troubleshoot the system in my newest Devlog:
