Negative aura overriding

As I understand if a unit has two auras of the same type, the one with the higher value is applied (e.g., Devotion Aura L3 +5 armor overrides Lion Horn’s +1.5 armor aura).

The problem is that this also applies to negative auras: a −5 defense aura gets overridden by a -1 defense aura cause -1 is higher than -5.

Is there a way to change this without recreating the aura via triggers?

Then they will stack ig. In that case you can have +5 and +1.5 armor if it's Devotion Aura for example
Yes, which fixes the issue since now the -1 armor will not override the -5 armor anymore.

If this is a problem with levelled abilities where a weaker hero (lower level ability) is overriding a stronger hero (higher level ability) then you might need to resort to a trigger based aura as I do not think Object Editor Devotion Aura has enough customisability to do what you are after.
