Need a free program..

I need a free program to record my voice, because i'm need to make some demos for a band who needs a singer, plus I might do some voice acting for my own maps and others if they'd like. I'm looking for the highest quality free program as i have no money lol.

The audacity is awesome, but i can't figure out how to record my voice. I mean i know how but it won't pick it up. Ventrilo had same problem, but on msn it's fine, and I can hear fine out of it(mic/headphone combo thingy) so since it's working on msn i know it's in right slots or else it wouldn't pick me up at all.

Preferences --> Audio I/O --> Recording --> Check the device and/or change the channel.
