Multiplayer Campaign Q's

Someone told me that a campaign could be multiplayer as long as the players all have the maps in the same location. This is true, no?

If so, would it be possible to have players on different maps? And if so would they be able to communicate with each other via chat?

There is an ORPG with multiple maps (Ragos ORPG, if I'm not mistaken), yet that is something completely different:
It uses the same save/load-code and object-data (raw-codes) for all maps, so every save/load-code in the map can read the same data and therefore you can play with a hero in 1 map and load it in another map.

If you really want a campaign, it is impossible, gather your information from people who have a little experience in mapping
