Movie DVD - Needing some help here

Dear readers,

I have bought an original DVD on an exciting movie.
There is a recent project I am doing which involves some small video making for my school purposes solely.
I have decided to take parts of the movie from my DVD but I don't seem to know how to do it.
I tried to copy it directly from the DVD into my computer (Stupid method I know) but that doesn't seem to work.
Is there any way I can rip the movie from my DVD?
Is there a need for any software?
If there is, is there a trail version for it? (Free ones are also ok.)
If anyone has an idea on how to rip it, please tell me

You need a movie-maker kind of program, which enables you to cut complete movies, a professional program of that kind costs LOTS of money, but I dunno, just google for a alternative

Windows Movie Maker... lol. You should have it, if you've got an XP or anything newer.
