Ok I set up this little theory, and think I would be fun to see peoples pro's and cons against its truth:
Here goes
Ok my theory is that 0,9999999999 etc. (neverending number of 9's) is equal to 1! This is my 2 cons!

a = 0,99 etc
a10 = 10 * 0,99 = 9,99
a9 = 9,99 - 0,99 = 9
a = 9 / 9 = 1

My other con is:
We all agree that 1/3 is 0,33
2/3 is 0,66
3/3 is 1?!?! Should in theory be 0,99! Where did the last 0,01 come from?
I know that a number divided with itself is allways 1, but its the theory of it

Thats my opinion, now your turn!

lim[x->∞] -1/x + 1 = 1

y = -1/x + 1 has a horizontal asymptote at y = 1

y ≠ 1

Calculus turns 0.99999 into 1
Calculus works
0.99999 = 1

0.999999 recuring is not 1, it get infinitally close to 1 but never reaches it, this is called exponential decay (or possible growth i dunno).

Infinite decay is correct, good job. Everyone else is nuts so :evil: on you 8)

it depends, in earlier years schools try to teach maths for a reason, probability for gambling and percentages for intrest and whatever. but higher level maths is whats called pure maths, basically maths for the sake of maths, just to see what we can do with numbers. Which infact proves to be alot, almost everything can be explained with numbers if enough people think about it and work on it. So in a sense maths inst useless at all, but if you hate working with numbers and want a reason behind everything we do in maths, higher level is not for you.

(note i have posted this new because it is unrealated to the previous post)

the sign for a number recurring looks something like this
.º
9
so to make 0.9 recurring = 1 you need this

Heres my maths

1+1=2
2+2=4
4+4=8
8+8=16
16+16=32
32+32=64
64+64=128
128+128=16384
16384+16384=32768
32768+32768=65536
65536+65536=131072
131072+131072=262144
262144+262144=524288
524288+524288=1048576
1048576+104857=2097152

Pretty advanced maths isn't it? Well how about this

153x52435+53466-4535x3125/7

See if you can figure that out!

That is hardly math; that is arithmetic. Pfft.
