Making metal look a bit.. rotten?

well skinning aint really my thing, so can anyone help me out in trying to make the metal look rottenish

Search for photoreferences and study them first http://www.photo.horst-nuesse.de/pp/images/20060525221835_rotten iron.jpg then try to think how u could do such effect . If I were u , I would try to make custom brushes which will do such effect .

First of all, different colours.
Adding some Green/Brown (In small doses) will emphasise Age and yes, Rotten..ness.

If your using photoshop, you can mess around with short Pencil tool lines in White/Black then set to overlay to get a more, scratchy effect.
