As for general tips it simply focus on any AOE dispell, AOE buff/debuff, AOE stun, AOE heal, AOE damage/skill spell and buff/debuff aura, you get the point here. On majority of level you will be out teched, outnumbered or outleveled. So choose your hero skill well since they are the only tie breaker and sometime the noob play of massing one unit only tend to be the only real solutionExtremely difficult campaign starting from act 1. So difficult that it even makes me a bit disappointed with my skills in this game. After all, what’s the general strategy to beat a map where my ally is completely useless and it seems like the enemy troops are way stronger than mine? I’m saying this because on hard, in mission 1 act 2, it’s completely impossible to hold anything for more than 30 minutes, that’s because those damned spearmen simply destroy all my hope of winning this chapter. Any tips?
Edit: Progress...

If you want specific unit composition that work wonder it's depend of faction
Human
Greyguard : soldier, crossbowman, catapult, priest, fire mage
Golden guard: mass executor, crossbowman, war priest, angelic, war engine, and justicar
Ironfist: basically focused on gardon war aura (60% damage bonus is virtually make any unit viable until late game) but priest, overseer, cavarly, necromancer, darksteel golem, catapult work wonder. Late game just spam black dragon(they are the only thing with high enough health to survive late game dps and deal enough burst damage to building and unit plus splash damage)
Elf army: judicator priest sorcerer spellbreaker archer balista and valkrie. Maybe treant spell caster if you feeling fancy but priotize elf only
Royal army sole saving grace is sergeant with +3 armor devotion aura other than that just play mass knight priest crossbow strombringer catapult and defender
Dwarf chosen of hammerfall, mortar team, rune priest and shield guy (the one with 15 armor) and axeman
Orc is weird faction they have a lot of variety of barrack unit but everything else is basically the same until dominion era but ironically the basic strategy is divided only by 4 possibility whether or not you have the troll wicth doctor and whether or not you are orc era or dominion era
You have which doctor. Mass doctor, other spell caster and barrack unit of any flavor of grunt, ranged grunt, catapult and small amount of raider
If you don't have which doctor, not so much spell caster, mass grunt catapult and ranged grunt with 6-8 raider for building snipe
You can replace grunt with golem and then shield breaker when you have them.
Dominion era is simple. Mass shield breaker which doctor catapult shaman and impaler.
Warmech can be used for anti-air. And other spell caster can be used but prioritze which doctor
Undead is even more complicated since every nexus have different aproach for unit
But there is a universal constant that 4-6 obsidian statue significant help on any mission where you can build them. After that necromacer bansee t1 foot soldier and meat wagon are the way to go. Assuming you can build them frost wyrm is the best unit against demon army (not the slave, it is to your interest to treat them as human faction with over-spec knight) excluding infernal.
Each faction overall weakness and strengh.
Human strengh: massive hero buff across mission, respectable dispell and healing capability, large variety of AOE damage, and dragon army later down the line, the best fortification out of all faction and the only faction with 2 long range siege damage unit
Human weakness: AOE damage or AOE stun due to having the least overall unit health on the same tier (in exchange or better armor and specific skill)
General strategy: long battle of attrition, shock and awe style with focusing on killing the main force first then sniping important building and frontal defensive line with tower, farm and production building
Orcs strengh pre dominion (AOE healing, AOE stun, high hp respectable AOE damage spell)
Orc weakness pre dominion (extremely hero focused, and extremely which doctor focused to the point where you strategy revolve around which hero you have and whether you have the doctor on master rank or adept rank) and low damage (no real burst AOE damage excluding catapult) and the worst fortification by far
General strategy (base trade, baiting enemy force, sniping building, hit and run, massive spell usage, hero sniping/stunning, defence in depth with tower inside the base and not around the base.
Orc strengh dominion era: high HP, high sustainability, large unit variety, AOE heal, AOE buff/debuff, AOE stun large variety of aura and dragon.
Orc weakness dominion era: low damage excluding the dragon and posses some of the most most supply inefficient sub-faction in the entire game (excluding dragon) in addition despite the large variety of unit the half is impractical due to the extremely high damage output the enemy bring on late game
I'm too lazy with undead purely because there are way too many specific mission only unit but healing, AOE and necromancer tend to solve most issue. Also they have the most efficient flying unit (excluding dragon) after flying machine. And they have the most busted active non ultimate skill thanks to rahandir (450 AOE damage that stun is a lot)
