Keeping Credit List for Mapping

Hi everyone, I am not sure where I can ask this but I'll ask here anyway.

This question is aimed to mappers. How do you guys keep your credit list without being too interruptive with your workflow? I feel lazy adding new models despite it being beneficial for my work due to how unintuitive my current approach is. Would love to hear how you guys do yours :)

Ideally I would take note and write the name down as well as the model as I'm grabbing it. A quick several second tab into Discord and tab back.

What I usually do is I retrospectively go an look up the model again, it helps that I use models from a few big names usually.

Also adding new models is super easy you shouldn't worry too much about it. Just download it and import the mdx file and they usually work right out of the .zip file lol

It's more of the mental note of writing names down which sorts of get into my way. I know the importance of crediting but I wish there's a comfortable way of handling it. I will consider the Discord you mentioned.

I got a project folder containing my map, I keep a credits.md file in it and I simply write the name of the peoples I'd like to credit.
When I credit resources from Hive, I copy paste the author names + link to the resource.
The annoying part is when I download a resource but I am not sure I'll keep it, I usually take note after I decide to keep it but then I may forget to note it:ogre_frown:.

simple : have a file (I use a text file but a spreadsheet or database could work too) that you update each time you import something.

Since everything here comes with a readme link to the download page it's pretty easy to find the authors even if you import months/years after you downloaded "just in case I'll use it later"

That last part is exactly what bugs me. I don't want to end up forgetting and then suddenly getting complaints when I have zero intention to get such issue to occur in the first place.

How does the file formatted? Is it a list of resources - author pair or something else? I'd love to know this method further

Pretty basic : list with resource name + author(s) listed by race/doodad etc. because I have like 50+ of them and I want to be thorough and often change during mapmaking (cf. campaign download page in my signature)

But if you credit someone after you ended up not using the resource I don't think anyone will object, so just the authors is probably enough

I am a HIVE mobile user, so what I do is write down the name of the author in a Notepad app and keep each separate credit list under different folders (for each map I upload only). I update the lost as needed and copy/paste it into the map page (which can be difficult because HIVE is not exactly geared towards mobile).

Yeah, it is not best geared to mobile. My approach is mostly laptop so I think there's more option for me

I tend to use bookmarks in browser for resources I have not finished implementing. Not too much of an issue for me when looking for stuff - bookmark, place in correct folder.

After I am sure I will use the resource, I write it down in a text file or excel file (based on what I am doing), grouping them if they are used in a combination with a different resource (like model+icon for a custom unit). Since it takes about 2 days to test new stuff, it is about 2 minutes to write the proper credit - since I do it on case-by-case basis, it feels like a part of workflow, and not a breakpoint.

Then, when I finish work, I add all credits from the file to the place where credits will be (on website - credits section, in game - credits level, in file set - notes file (when I do it for someone else)).

What I've started doing is importing files to paths that have the author's name in them -- for example I'm using a custom skin by 13LUR, so I've got it in Downloads\13LUR\DarkKnight.blp

Of course this needs some mild MDL editing to futz any models into using the credit-including paths, but this means I've got a guaranteed record of what's definitely in the map along with who made it. When it comes time to publish, I'll swish down the Import Manager and bang! Sorted.

Keep in mind that the site has this feature Asset scanner which can generate a credits list of resources in the map found on the site. Take note though, that I have no idea if it's 100% accurate both in terms of finding/matching all the used resources or crediting the proper names.
Regardless, it's a tool which can definitely help aside external HIVE material which you could make manual credits lists of.

How this works for Icons though? Icons need the ReplaceableTextures path to be readable in-game, no?

Ah well, there's always an edge case to trip you up. I make all my own icons so it's not a problem for me, but you could always rename the file instead? ...\BTNSomebodyElseMadeThis_TheActualIconName.blp
Thank you:grin::thumbs_up:

This is a last resort in my book, and it's still quite a work to manually work with it

I'm not quite sure I understood but the point of the asset scanner is to automatically generate a list from loads of used resources (found on this site) by uploading your map in the program. The idea is to avoid manually writing each name credit per resource. That means doing the list however else you want for non-HIVE stuff whose crediting cannot be automated with the Assets Scanner (perhaps with some user made program but which would still require you to make a database of the resources first).

When I had project with a lot of extenal stuff I was just writing them into notepad.
If u write something down and do not use it after all its okay, who cares if u credit somebody who is not acutally in map, better than forget somebody.
