It's a nightmare!

It really is. I tried to turn on my computer, and it brought up this screen, which said that Windows could not boot up properly, and there were a few options to choose from, like Safe Mode and Last Mode that Worked. No matter what I chose it brought me back to the same screen.

Eventually, I did the system recovery thing, and now all of my files are gone. All of the old user profiles are gone as well, and none of my applications are installed. Did my hard drive get re-formatted, or are the files still there somehwere.?

And yes, I know, I probabaly did something stunningly dim-witted. Please tell me what.

I always used to get this problem... I just turned the PC off, left it for a while (like 20 minutes) then turned it back on...

Plob in your Windows CD and boot from it.. Then select to restore from a windows restore point..

you then choose the restore point dated from the day you restored your computer.

also, in this situation boot in safe mode and see what errors windows gives you. it may be possible to fix ur pc without resotring.

Yep, like if your system is in the middle of booting and you hit the reboot button manually, you'll get that screen. It's no big deal. You should also be able tor estore to a previous restore point from within XP.

And System Restore shouldn't touch any of your files or settings, so i'm not sure what happened with you.
