It's a nightmare!

It really is. I tried to turn on my computer, and it brought up this screen, which said that Windows could not boot up properly, and there were a few options to choose from, like Safe Mode and Last Mode that Worked. No matter what I chose it brought me back to the same screen.

Eventually, I did the system recovery thing, and now all of my files are gone. All of the old user profiles are gone as well, and none of my applications are installed. Did my hard drive get re-formatted, or are the files still there somehwere.?

And yes, I know, I probabaly did something stunningly dim-witted. Please tell me what.
 
Yep, like if your system is in the middle of booting and you hit the reboot button manually, you'll get that screen. It's no big deal. You should also be able tor estore to a previous restore point from within XP.

And System Restore shouldn't touch any of your files or settings, so i'm not sure what happened with you.
