Is WC3 "dead"?

I was playing a lot of Blade and Soul past 2 weeks and I kept thinking to myself how cool it would be to create an ORPG or at least a game of the sorts. I know using something like unity or unreal would take a lot longer since I'd need to create my own models and such with only limited time. Is the WC3 population big enough where my work wouldn't go unnoticed or would making it on sc2 be a better idea?

Sadly, no. I don't know anything about SC or SC2. (But this forum has sections for SC)

Yea and blizzard has guides from what I found. WC3 editor is easier from what I was told, idk. WC3 seems like easier way but less recognition. SC2 harder and maybe more depending how map goes. Also idk how many custom models there are as opposed to wc3.

Warcraftians are certainly a dwindling minority, then again i for one see no similar game out there with the same charme.

I tried Sc2 and many of its custom maps, but it feels very different somehow, not only because it's futuristic.
I tried DotA2 and many workshop projects, only Overthrow keeps me entertained. Also doesn't have that distinct charme, but i'd rather play DotA2 then DotA1 for many obvious reasons.

Wc3 with a facelift, like reconnect system, true widescreen support, maybe better graphics, might attract long gone veterans or new players. And do something about the maphacks, cheaters in general...

I guess there's a greater chance for Wc4 than that happening tho ;F

This is exactly what I was and am thinking about all the time.

Warcraft 3 allows you to create custom games. Yes, there are a lot of limitations we all hate. However, I tried myself with Unity and creating assets and let me tell you: You are a god. You can basically do everything.

However, programs like Unity require such a knowledge about programming languages like C# that you simply cannot just go there and create a game, like you can more or less with the Warcraft 3 World Editor.
Simple things like camera movement or interface build is so complicated in programs like Unity, although tons of tutorials and helps are available, that I drawback. If you haven't studied computer science you have a bad hand.

As previous posters said, if you have fun creating maps, go ahead. But know that after finishing it one day, there might not be many players actually playing it. That's the fate of many Warcraft maps and there aren't many maps which escaped the status of being unplayed and/or unknown.

Speaking of which, can you name some of these maps and why they are still played? I'm guessing a carefully balanced mixture of replayability+overall quality+approachability+uniqueness is the key, however that's obviously hard to achieve.

Yes, I agree, that's probably the case.

Yes, sure. Please note this is a subjective selection, there might be a lot more.

Sunken City ( quite often) - Dungeon Crawler, RPG
-> Sunken City has a low learning curve and offers a few difficulties to choose from, allowing newbies to play and enjoy the map and pros to challenge higher difficulties for glory. It is a Hosted Project on Hive and is updated on a regular basis.

Roguelike ( now and then many games in short time) - Dungen Crawler
-> Its greater randomness offers challenge and the randomness factor leads to pain. However, even greater is the glory once you finish the map.

Both maps profite from very different hero and playing styles.

Gaia's ORPG - ORPG
-> Probably the wc3 map with the higherst average texture quality. Still updated and strongly team-focussed, hardly is possbile without a team.
I also heard you have quite a few choices to evolve your hero.

I would say these are the main ones, all available on Hive.

Often played is also any kind of Hero Line Wars (HLW) map and Line Tower Wars ( LTD), I would say due to the PvP factor.

Yeah i played all those maps quite excessively, and i think some are missing:

DotA obviously
Legion TD

And funnily enough, basic ladder games are easy to find, i just recently played some 2v2 AT games. Also free for all games and 4v4 RT prevail.

DaneTheBeast right, it's half-dead due because of the popularity of DotA at Asia. Like Philippines, which I can nearly found everyone who's playing at the Internet Cafe playing DotA.

Although in Philippines, LoL, CrossFire, or DotA2 enlisted as the most played games in PH, DotA still included.
So therefore, without DotA at WC, it would be nearly dead. :p
