How-to-play competitive Melee "tutorial map"

I've always had this idea... 20yr ago iteration of this map was to teach myself basic build orders, ie press esc after reading text on screen basic...

There seems to be influx of new players on W3champions (so much I can find 4v4 games in USwest timezone) from Grubby's "Bronze Series" content. Seems like a good time to map a relatively all inclusive how-to wc3 melee map.

Note-- I suck at melee...So need some input from at least decent player or two. plz help. I have been practicing and getting back into groove but I need expert opinion.

Ideas

  • a few build orders for each race,
    • hard build order (expo rush to knights)
    • early game options >> mid game adaption >> late game strategy
    • misc other notable/meta build orders
  • 'multiple melee maps in this one' to teach different creeping strats, also at least one 4v4 map although teaching would be 1v1 ideas + teamwork + social norms of 4v4rt lol.
    • cropped maps to practice build orders and defend against fake enemy attacks/creepjack etc.
    • full sized maps to teach full game play -- various scripted scenarios
      • choose build / prefab build order for scripted match
      • base layout >> creeping/player harass >> mid / late game

Scenarios / triggers / selections :

  • 1v1 tier options
    • simple list of build orders / race, practice building mode?
    • build order practice + base layout + creeping + mid game
      • base layout
      • build order
      • creeping / player harass
      • attacking / defending first engagement
      • repeat with personal time/score record?
    • full, mostly scripted game
      • scripted as above until some melee AI takes over match
    • creeping onlypractice
      • prefab base + force
      • time limit to engage creeps and macro base / can only lose x units
  • 4v4
    • simple explanation of difference 1v1 vs 4v4 and 4v4 meta build list, practice build mode?
      • builds
      • base layout
      • creeping solo / share
      • easy meta to end games quickly (hero harass certain races on certain maps etc)
      • late alter = tavern hero
      • ???

oh cool. I had also thought about doing something similar... I had actually thought about reaching out to grubby and trying to collab with him on the planning (and maybe get him to record some voicelines). My Idea was to try to integrate it with some sort of simple plot (like orc bootcamp) and make it a campaign that actually prepares you to play on ladder. (unlike the blizzard campaign, where you win, think you know how to play and then get utterly annihilated the first time you try pvp and decide to just play the campaign again...) But I'm busy finishing up other things first...

good luck! (and who knows, if you do a good job maybe I'll try ladder again 20 years later... :pgrin:)

What did you have in mind for actually teaching the player concepts?

Ps check oit my build order overlay, correct build order regardless of micro macro is huge mmr difference, then rest mechanics come natural.

I was thinking teaching one step at a time, and each time having the next level be the next step forwards.

the beginning was going to be about intial build order. I think I would focus on one basic build per race and just drill it (I think that with things that are just essentially remembering details and numbers, repetition is the best teacher, and muscle memory is the best student). so, like have a map where you keep having to construct bases - where you start from 5 peons and a main (like in melee), and have to keep doing the build order in a descending amount of time, with the last time being pretty much the optimal time. afterwards start incorporating creeping into that, so you have to do the same base construction, but involving some level of macro.

maybe next also have a level that focuses on base layout, where you teach concepts like trying to only have one entrance/exit to your base/which buildings should be in front and which are more crucial and should be further back.

I would probably try something similar to micro wars for micro, but with an added tutorial baked in on how to properly utilize hotkeys in wc3.

that's as far as I had thought out so far...
