I used 3ds max 2010 for WC3 models. I exported with dex's exporter. It doesn't convert anims properly which is why I never made an animated bipedal model.

3ds max 5 sucks. Bad. Gmax is crap. (All my old models were made with gmax) Milkshape is less crap but still crap. Blender doesn't work.

Don't get Gmax. It's terrible. Milkshape is only 20$. If your really serious, get 3ds max 2010 for around 4k$. I doubt your that serious though...

I don't understand why everyone thinks gmax is crap, it has a proper animation export script, it's really easy to do animation and skinning and you can make scratch models in it.

You just have to add all the animated textures / materials / stuff like that in magos.

It's not what it can't do, it's how it does what it can do. It's based off of 3ds max 4. When I say based off of, I mean they stripped 4 down to nothing but basic rigging, animating, mesh making, and UVWrapping.

The UI functionality is just so bad. Instead of taking the good things from a standard max UI, it took the bad and amplified it. That, and being based off of max 4, there aren't a whole lot of poly modeling tools. (Not many at all.) The lack of rendering power already makes it suck compared to all 3ds max versions. Plus, again because it's based off on older version of max, there are so many little bugs and issues. It's just not a smooth experience. When I said, "basic rigging, animating, mesh making, and UVWrapping" I really did mean basic. Animating is insanely hard in gmax, mesh making has almost no poly modifiers, UVWrapping is a nightmare because of the lack of tools, and rigging is again, lacking in tools.

But, if it works for you, I guess that's fine. I just remember hating it. It's just so tedious to deal with gmax's many "issues".

I don't think you're doing justice to it by compairing it to 3dsmax, as, i do agree with you, it is just a stripped down 3dsmax 5, but it's FREE All it's functionality faults aren't that bad, and animating is actually really easy if you understand what you're doing (click animate, move slider, move bones, done!)

all the material and geoset modifiers that are missing aren't really needed, i can survive without them, it's just a bit more tedious, you can usually do everything in magos if you have enough experiance with it.

True it is free.

And, believe me, the animating in gmax is awful unless you just want some basic movements. It takes me 5 minutes to animate in 3ds max 2010 what would take an hour in gmax.

But, your absolutely right. It's free. So it's good for a start. I'd spend the 20 dollars and get milkshape later though. And, possibly 3ds max even further on. :D
