how to make cpu controlled enemies use spells?

any help greatly appreciated. search function didnt turn out anything...

Trigger them to do an animation and trigger the whole spell.
Or simply trigger them do the spell they got, which I think doesn't work so good.

I could show you an example but too lazy at the moment and triggers aren't really my thing (nothing is).
