The "Mechanical" classification ("Stats - Unit Classification") gives the unit one of the 4 hidden "On Fire" abilities, depending on the "Stats - Race" field. "On Fire" abilities play a burning sound at the location of the unit if the unit is heavily damaged and add fire effects on it if the "Sprite" attachment points are present in the model, as you assumed correctly.

I don't want to sound insisting, but just take a note that my SLK also allows to access these hidden abilities in the object editor.
If you don't use Reforged, I could make a version for older patches - just in case you would be interested.

In fact my edit of the SLK was something so basic that anyone can do it in a breeze.

All I did is change all the fields in the SLK that had 0 for value in the column "use in editor", and change them to 1 so that all abilities do actually show in the object editor.
It seems though that I forgot 1 ability in the list because I can't find the ability called "Select User" that allows an item shop to select a player rather than a unit or hero.
