How does Spiked Barricades attach to a model exactly?

Playing with attaching them to Zerg buildings. All these models shown here have the origin attachment and various sprite attachment point. Nowhere on the Spiked Barricades ability does it reference any attachment point that you can modify. Attempting to add one in the object editor appears to have no effect.

I tried adding an ability based on an orb effect to attach the spikes model to the origin, and while that works, it does not support having a research requirement (it will always be visible) so that's no good.

Is there any way to get the spikes appearing on the Lair and Hive? I'd rather not resort to any triggers to achieve the effect.
