First, I want to compliment you on creating this thread, rather than actually uploading your work to the section right away.
This is definitely the better way to get feedback of our community, and we all can watch you improve.

Now, as for the icon itself:
For your first one, this looks decent. Well done!
However, the anatomy of the hand is very cartoony, it would also need additional shading to make it looks like a 3-dimensional object.
Also, using one undefined and one defined object next to each other is not necessarily recommended.
If you define the actual effect and connect it to the hand / "make it work with it", you will get a much more prominent result. Look at various icons created by Blizzard to see what I mean.
Their work is always very defined, effects aswell as backgrounds are usually rather detailed.
Another thing would be that you will have to apply proper borders to your work.
You will find Button Manager to be most helpful, as it is very easy to do it with few clicks only.
Also, I suggest you take a look at the following tutorials, as you will certainly learn something from them (especially techniques to get the results you envision):
