efficiency of projectiles... a lot of projectiles

I have archers which instead of their attack spawn a dummy unit that is moved in the direction they were shooting, until it hits a footman (large area) who blocks it, or another type unit (smaller area) who gets hurt by it.
the issue is that there are rather extreme amounts of these archers, who then shoot extreme amounts of arrows. this is not good for FPS.

what's the absolute maximum this can be optimized to?
