It does exist, to whomever is labeling it. The person who hears of it also causes it to exist, as do the people it affects. What changes is their perception of which is good and which is evil. Here is a decent example to illustrate:

I hit Ryann. (I saw it as good, Ryann saw it as evil, Bob saw it as evil)
I hit Ryann because he was wallowing in self-pity (I=good, Ryann=evil, Bob=good)
I hit Ryann because he is a masochist (I=g, R=g, B=g)

I did the same action, but other things affected the outcome. Btw, Susan is a pacifist and saw it all as evil.

Who is right? No one, but good and evil still existed.

Deckboy, if I were you I would reverse your question. After all, the first hardly matters if the second is not true or valid to a point.

Dan, are you basically asking at what point does evil become a necessity? Or are you asking are there necessary evils?

Of course there are necessary evils. The cohesion of groups is impossible without compromise; if everybody was allowed to do as they wished, society would fall apart. But I don't think those compromises are evil; rather, as humans are social animals, they are more of a benefit - giving each individual a chance to benefit from all others.

You just contradicted yourself there, I suggest you look back on it and clarify more.

ok well lets put it like this, how do we know that the laws that are inforced are right? why should we follow them, what is that sense of right and wrong that we all have, even if it is different for everyone?

and

is inforcing those laws evil in itself?

Laws are not good, they help to keep the cohesion of society together. People are social animals and many are willing to prey on each other. Most people know a fuzzy sense of right and wrong, but they are willing to ignore that in order to get ahead and benifit for themselves. This is why the ideal society could happen, but only if everyone was brainwashed and\or dead.

Think of Marxism, it is a great idea and is an ideal society. Then look what happened to it when you factored in humans: communism. Democracy is a great idea that does not work either. Niether is evil, niether is good, they are both just ways to try to keep unmanageable people in check and to provide security for its people.

Are you trying to say it is perspective? That the words aremeaningless? Are you just saying what I say but with a lot less explanation?
