[General] Dialogue Choices for RPGs

Has anyone ever tried making a dialogue system that allows players to choose dialogue for their own characters? If not, do you think something like this can be implemented in a map?

Obviously there's the dialog boxes and buttons but it doesn't really fit that much text and it also blocks out the center of the screen. The other option is simply displaying text on the screen and having the player type out the letter/number next to their dialogue choice.

1. Hello
2. Goodbye.

a. Hello
b. Goodbye

But there's the chance of the text disappearing before the player has fully read it. There are the more tedious options such as spawning dummy objects in an arc around the character for the player to just select, and if they're mad enough, using some advanced script to make an entirely custom interface screen.

I'm interested in your thoughts about this kind of feature, or if you've had experience implementing something like this in the past, I want to know what was your approach to it. TIA!
