Hi, I would like to know which files from the game MPQ archives can be edited and imported to my map, so that they will work.
For example, it would be nice to edit FrameDef files to completely rearrange UI, or MiscData to change camera behaviour. (I can do it locally ofc, but I would like to change some UI in my maps)
So my question is: is there some list of files, that wc3 will look for when loading the map? Or is there any way to force wc3 to load my custom configuration files?

Just copy/paste this inside an empty notepad-file and import it in your map under the name "war3mapSkin.txt".
It's possible that I have changed a few things in this file for testing purposes, but you'll figure it out ;)

Note 1: if you import this, all changes made in "Advanced -> Game Interface" will be erased (and you cannot change them either, unless you do it via this text-file).

Note 2: there are also commands to change the command buttons, I still need to put those in a list though (I was too lazy to do so xD).

You can see that by changing these settings you can move icons, text fields, buttons wherever you want on the screen, so you can change not only the skins and texts, but entire layout of the UI. The problem is I can't get these files to load from map, only way I can get them to work was to put them directly to warcraft3 directory. The same goes for UI\MiscData.txt which contains some interesting settings (you can change camera reaction on mouse wheel for example, thus enhancing map's custom camera system), but it just won't load.

Also, where did you get the full [FrameDef] parameters list? (btw. when I last used custom game interface, it didn't delete lines I added manually and have no GUI representation. I changed fonts, which aren't in the Custom game interface menu, and when I later chaged someting in WE, it retained the font setting lines)

Ohh, yeah... I've been trying to change that data as well (I've searched a while for it, but couldn't find anything that worked, so I gave up...).
Apart from that, I've also been trying to change the gold/lumber-text (when you get gold/lumber, or the miss/critical strike-text), the standard leaderboard layout, the escape menu and... well, probably everything within the FrameDef panel.
Well, I'll keep trying out a few things, if it ever works, I'll tell you (and everyone on the hive who's interested xD).

The list can be found in the file "GlobalStrings.fdf", but all BNET-things do not work (they'll cause an error), that's why I left them out ^^

Well I found this post claiming that changing the miss/critical texts works, but it failed for me, so maybe something was changed in a recent patch. (or I screwed it up, but since I only edited the file and imported it, I think I did it correctly)

Anyway, the thing that brought me on this issue was a minimap feature, I was trying to get rid of the white rectangle that indicates where player is looking now and I thought I could find some settings in some of these config files. Any idea how it may be done?

Well, the gold/lumber now works for me, unfortunately, the .fdf-files are still failing...

I also have 3 additional files:
- war3mapExtra
- Units\CommandStrings
- war3mapMisc

The last one is used for the gold/lumber/crit/...-texts and everything in the gameplay constants.
Units\CommandStrings is to change the attack/move/...-tooltips, hotkeys and names.
It is also used for errors, such as "Not enough gold" (though this can also be done with the war3mapSkin... well, whatever :p).
war3mapExtra is very weird, I only have 2 commands for it: the sky and the weather.

More info about the Lumber/Gold-text:

So in theory all of these setting files could be modified and it should work in the game. Unfortunatelly there is not a single fdf file (which could be used to load any other files through "IncludeFile" command). So unless some of these files uses fdf file structure, or there is a way to load a file manually (I noticed "preload" native, but I have no idea what it does), there is propably no way to load fdf files.

Anyway, from the list above I noticed certain interesting facts:
- many of the files have their campaign version (that was kinda obvious to anyone who ever made a campaign), but these can be used even in a normal map, for example to easily merge two custom unit lists
- for some reason the game loads L.mpq, which contains couple textures. It is exactly same as V.mpq, D.mpq, which are all in war3.mpq. No idea what that is
- the game loads following interesting files:
CustomKeys.txt - maybe it would be possible to include them in map?
Units\MiscGame.txt - this unfortunatelly only contains settings, which could be done through Gameplay Constants, but maybe it would be possible to include some of the settings from MiscData.txt and they would work in here)
UI\TipStrings.txt - allows to change the game tips (in game accesible through ESC menu), tested and works

Interesting... I just changed and added objects without touching the object editor :p

I thought that I had ever imported CustomKeys.txt and it didn't work, but perhaps I had done something wrong (the only thing I can think of is a wrong path), I think it can be done through Units\CustomStrings.txt anyway.
I can't see Units\MiscGame.txt in the mpq-file :s I can only see MiscData.txt.
The tipstrings can be changed, just tested it, works fine :D

I also noticed the preload... and I also don't know what it does :p
perhaps it's something for campaigns? (that you preload a map, so it doesn't need to load that long when switching), it's just a guess.

I'll try to mess around with them for a while to see what can be changed and what cannot.

Units\MiscGame.txt is only in one of the mpqs, I think in war3.mpq. But that doesn't matter since it doesn't contain anything useful :grin:

The list was obtained by hooking the function that warcraft uses to extract files from MPQs. It was originally 328 files (and that was for loading empty map with 2 footman in the middle), I removed the .mdx and .blp files

EDIT:
UI\HelpStrings.txt - the wall of text you get when you click "help" in the ESC menu. Combined with Tips, it would certainly be better as gameplay info than using the Quest tab.
