It was never impossible. It's quite easy. You just replace the parts by naming the imported texture the same as the texture you wish to replace.
Ok please explain how in WC3 I could make the mini-map twice and big and place it at the top right of the screen. Yup it was impossible.

Anyway Blizzard wrote over at BattleNet a tutorial explaining how to modify the XML files for the UI.
