Changing an objects color.

This is normally done through texturing the model. In Warcraft III (and most games), there is a base model and one or more textures (a.k.a. skins) in the form of BLP files.

If you can edit the skin, you can recolor the armor/skin in any way using any image editor. Most people use Photoshop, but since that is not freeware (or actually, it is, for most people heheh), you can alternatively use a program like Gimp. See:
