Is it possible to change a unit's mini-map icon into the hero one without changing it into an actual hero? How?

You could upload a new "icon" into wc3 that replaces the typical unit minimap icon, but it would be the case for ALL units, which is probably not desired.
Although maybe you could do it with the neutral building icon and just add it to the units you need to be different.

Put an actual invisible dummy hero with the locust ability (Aloc) below your unit.
