At first I thought the black thing was the ethereal stuff until I looked closer. 
Now I realize there are purple ghosts all over. Better definition and a glow for the acolyte, though weak could help.

I would love to see a little bit of color variation in here, as it will add more versatility to the icon. Also, it would be a nice thing if you added a slight light purple glow around the acolyte, in order to separate it a little from the background, and focus attention on him.

Surprisingly, while this is called Ethereal Form, I find it more suitable to either Shadow-based abilities or upgrades to cultists.
