No it is not. I brought the DVD version of WoL and HotS but all I needed them for was the keys. Sure I installed from the WoL disk to save time, but still needed to patch straight after anyway. By the time I went to the shop to get HotS disk I already had the game installed via patch so I physically never used the DVD, just the CD key from it.

If I want, I could throw away the disks and download the game off battlenet whenever I want.

That is not right. Are you sure it is a genuine disk?

If you have no real internet cap then I recommend downloading the client from Battlenet. Even if you do not own SC2 it will still download you the same full game (what you have access to is determined when you log in). With the BattleNet client beta it is as simple as selecting SC2 and pressing install (choosing the language you want to install).

The game will not ask for the disks unless you install it from the disks. Like all modern Blizzard games (except betas) anyone can download the full game just by creating a battlenet account. What content they can use is determined by their level of access on their account.

As far as I know what you are describing should never happen. I would be very careful.

The HotS version of starcraft 2 doesn't even come with the ejecutable of the expansion in it, you have to manually download hots... the cd is just for the cd key, i don't really see the point of doing that other than admiting that they can't complete stuff.

It does not have a CD check unless you are installing from a DVD in which case it will be only the first time you want to install it. The fact it was a problem makes me suspicious that you were trying to something unintended to install the game or it was loading for the first time.

i didnt try to install it i just launched it from the start menu. it wasnt the first time i was running it either. as i said earlier i dont care that it have cd check. i wont get rid of the dvd anyway and since its case is thinner it takes less space. i created this topic to inform people about the cd check.

Except there is no DVD check... Or at least no DVD check after you first run it from a DVD install.

1. Installed from WoL DVD.
2. Put WoL DVD away somewhere in home to gather dust.
3. Automatically updated to HotS a few hours before it was released.
4. Brought HotS for key, never used disc and put somewhere in home to gather dust.
5. Can play any time I want just by logging in to Battlenet, no mention of disks anywhere.

So what you are saying makes absolutely no sense. I installed from a disc yet have never used the disc since the initial installation.

its case is thinner it takes less space
Than what? As far as I know all games still come in standard DVD sized (half VHS) cases. They used to come in much smaller CD holders back in early 2000s but for some reason they thought bigger was better for DVDs. Both HotS and WoL came in such a half VHS sized standard DVD holder.

Like I said, I installed from DVD and never used the DVD ever again. Even updated to HotS automatically (without even asking me, mind you).

Are you sure you are not confusing a patch with the game installation? What you install from the disc is the BattleNet 2.0 client. It then needs the DVD in the drive so that it can install most of the data files from it (only part the DVD is needed). If you use the online client this stage is done by downloading the needed data files instead. It will then proceed to automatically patch the game after it has installed those files (as it wants to be the latest version) but at this stage you can remove the disc (unless the client is bugged). After this initial installation from disc, you can throw them away as BattleNet will patch you automatically to the latest version, expansion and all.

the fact that you installed wings of liberty rather than heart of the swarm could be an explanation. i however installed heart of the swarm so i need to live with the occasional cd check but that is ok. accusing me of being stupid however is unacceptable. i can understand why you stopped being a moderator with that kind of attitude.

No because currently the resulting game files are identical, no mater which you install there is only 1 end version. All my WoL executable files have been over written with HotS executable files when Blizzard patched to 2.0. The game had already updated before I even brought the discs and anyone can DL the full game (soon anyone can play arcade maps without even buying any version of SC2) so there is no reason there would be any form of disc security. The only time the disc needs to be in is if you are installing from disc in which case it will be used as a data source instead of the internet.

No one is accusing you of anything. I just think that something is wrong with your installation and am concerned about it. It could, for example, be malware trying to trick you into getting a fake "no CD" crack which will key log you. This was done with WC3 where people kept releasing "NO CD" cracks even after the disc check was patched from the game.

...Did you try to install Heart of the Swarm before installing Wings of Liberty?
Should make no difference as the game will automatically download any missing or corrupt files.

today i had to install a small patch
Strange, there has been no small patch for many months as far as I can tell. The only thing that has changed is that D3 (if installed) will be pre-loading 2.0 in preparation for March launch, but that is totally unrelated to SC2.

EDIT

Maybe it was a pre-download for the new SC2 2.1 patch that was just released? In any case it still makes no sense.
