Hello everybody.

This started as a multiplayer map that, thinking about it, kinda combined DotA and Hero Arenas. But when I reformatted my computer map making was the last thing on my mind, and the triggers on the map suddenly disappeared. Long story short, I'm making a campaign.

I have no screenshots yet, but when I do I'll update this post.

The work has just begun, I'm still learning to import files. The very basic terraining of the tutorial is finished, the plot has a tutorial, a rough middle, and a pretty well planned ending. But I really don't want to release much about the storyline. I'm open to talking about gameplay though.

The idea is it's a First Person Shooter type game. It's set in the near future. A war broke out in 2005(has nothing to do when work started on any of the maps) and the alliances have both merged into 2 large countries. You play as the protagonist, a soldier in the military who has received the highest possible training available in the military.

The tutorial is your first mission, which is pretty routine.

Also, your "friends of the academy" will join you if you decide to play LAN, although the feasibility of this relies on the max file size for playing LAN campaigns.

I plan on releasing a "demo" which would be the tutorial level, but I can't until the weapons system and the camera are working properly, and then I have to finish the map. I can then release it as a single demo for everyone to try.

Multiplayer:

I will be sending out Multiplayer maps alongside the standalone campaign.

Including but not Limited to:

Capture the Flag
"Slayer"
Team "Slayer"
Battlefront: First Edition, which is Battlefront before I decided to make a campaign

Progress:

Tutorial/Demo Map: 50%
Weapons System: 0%
Custom Models Imported: 5%-10%
Overall Campaign Terraining: 1%
Plot Written: 20%
Cinematics: .5%
Voice Acting: 0%

I would really like to add many custom models and voice files. Since mrchewy informed me that Campaigns can not be played on LAN, this means I do not have to worry as much about file size. The voices will be for the opening and ending as well as for tidbits throughout the game. It'll feel like Cortana from the original Halo, just kinda guiding you mid-mission.

I should tell you that campaigns cannot be played on Multiplayer. You could make it so all the content is on one map, but file size could be a problem and you won't be able to do many things that a Campaign allows you to do.

The idea itself seems pretty good. Such a setting would require a great deal of work; I hope you're up for a challenge ;) . By the way, is "2005" a typo?

No, I want it to be placed in a modern time, and it makes more sense that a war would already be going on, not just started. But it still takes place in the near future(no particular year, but closer to 2015) so I figured that leaves plenty of room for me to make new technology as well as give time for some 50 major nations to dissolve into one another until there were only 2 per side.

This way, it's as realistic as I can make it, but still leave room for errors, which I can always blame on "new, future technology".

Are you absolutely sure that Campaigns can't be played on LAN, because if so, then that saves me a lot of work, but the game won't turn out the same way as expected.

Oh well. The Medic, Weapons Specialist, Pilot, and...whatever other class I had, will just have to be Multiplayer-only alongside Soldier.

Oh yes, I feel this is a good time to mention. As this game is probably the closest any campaign will ever come to a standalone video game instead of a Warcraft 3 map, I WILL have mutliplayer maps, including all out killing to team killing, and CTF as well as the Battlefront game mode, which is what was originallly intended to be Battlefront: First Edition.

I'll add this info to the main post as well as a sort of "tracker" on progress.

Regarding the new technology, I doubt we'll see any major military changes any time soon. The US have been using the same standard rifle for over forty years now. Talk about conservatism :/

Still sounds good. I'll be on the lookout for future updates ;) .

Well still, the fact that we AREN'T in a major war and it's past 2005 as well as the game being set in the "near future" means if I make a mistake somewhere so it's not as realistic, I can always just say it's the near future in a world that has a different history from ours. It worked well for Phoenix Wright games, since it managed to explain how laws may be different.
