[Strategy / Risk] Baguette Total War

Here we go, a game which sweats of baguette and honhonhon all over the place. It won't be a very large scale project but will have a solid finish line. I'm eager to show what i learned about JASS !
France Total War, qu'est-ce que c'est ?
From the shadows of my home country, it shall be a 22 player Risk where each of them controls a French region. Every of them will have unique units and mechanics. Income is generated through towns, large towns and metropolis of France. You can capture them to get extra, but remember only your original ones gives full income (else a quarter) ; so reconquest of your homeland is profitable. All main towns will be shown in the map, but staked ones would be fused to the main one so it won't be a mess.
Units will be 20% slower and smaller, attacking and dying slowly. Armies won't be very numerous, as the map would be a bit laggy.
Every clichés will be exploited : Island of France being royalist and bad drivers, Brittany pigs and Normandy cows fighting for the St-Michael mountain, Alsace fighting with German soldiers and full of sauerkraut gas warfare, Corsica being very independent and crude ; i think you grasped the concept.

All regions have the same common units :

Basic & cheap infantry. Can be upgraded to Jeambon-Beurre Militia
¤ Floating Baguette
Basic ship for naval transportation. Doesn't attack.
¤ (for naval towns) War Floating Baguette

--- Situation :
Having rich towns & units, it don't have a lot of expanding opportunities. It's defended by the Maginot line in the form of strong towers scattered in the Vosges. German territories makes a natural defense against encirclement, capturing them would give a low ratio of increased income against the cost of capture.

They have good defensive positions due to the Massif Central, but some of their town are scattered & hard to access. Under the pressure of the strong Bourgogne and Rhône Alpes they may resist well enough if they are distracted.

--- Situation :
They are one of the richest region of the map, but encircled between strong ennemies. Franche Comté might seek opportunities and would be a long term pain.

Ranged unit with very slow projectiles. Can slow down ennemies & summon swarms of snails, slowing them even more.

Tough melee unit with good HP regeneration. If alive long enough, gets fats & become stronger. A killed ox will refund half of its price to the owner, fully when it's fat.
¤ Vine Master
Support unit. Tough melee warrior supplying nearby units in alcohol & mana. Can pay a round to heal allied units. Have a 15% evasion.

Enclaved in the west, this region shares a big rivalry against Normandy. Once taking back the St-Michel mount, they may bring their pride to a new peak.

Gathers additional gold at sea. Very weak against other ships. Can throw rotten fish to other units to slow them down.
¤ [Unique] Briton Independantist
Short ranged unit effective against Normand units and taking Briton or Normand towns.
¤ [Unique] Crêpe Maker
Ranged unit, which throws Briton pancakes toward ennemies. He can use different flavors to impact the effect on targeted units.
¤ Cider master
Support unit. Strong melee brawler with AoE passive boosts. The mana supply is weaker than other alcohol masters.
¤ Drunkard

Cornered region with not many opportunities in neutral countries, but can well defend itself with his powerful unique units.

They have the hardest and the most special situation of the map. Being isolated, they would look for opportunities in the coasts. Their units are very strong but not numerous. They begin with the poorest towns.

--- Situation :
Not the strongest region at all, but it have opportunities in Switzerland if needed. They may bother Burgunbdy expansion and gathering strong allies. Their units are interesting but overwhelmed by other regions's power.

Long reach melee infantry, several ranks can attack at once.
¤ [Unique] Clockwork
Large melee mech effective at taking down ranged units.

A better version of a Cow. Can generate Comté to distract ennemies. Have magic immunity. If killed it will enrage nearby Franche-Comté units for a duration.
¤ [Unique] County madman
Ranged unit. Gets stronger if Franche-Comté loses towns (and get weaker if they take back their lands). Bonus damage against Burgundy & Île de France units.
¤ [Unique] Absinthe Master
Support unit. Can make large groups of ennemies drunk and sick.
¤ [Unique] Vauban Engineer
Can repair Towns and structures of your own.
¤ [Unique] Potato Farmer
Periodicaly creates potato crops, which becomes potato warriors then potato monsters if alive long enough.
¤ Cow Farmer
Summons Cows in the battlefield, which can heals nearby units with Milk.

Locals have a hard time dealing with people claiming Moselle is German. This unit have bonus against german-related units.

--- Situation : A good position for a beginner. Diverse units and the best navy of the map. Although might encounter a serious coalition of nearby regions, as well as Corsica which is dangerous if left alone. Their units can take naps to regain hp while being inactive.

Medium ranged unit, throwing an alcool called Pastis. Targets have a chance to get drunk at each hit.

☼ Terrain and towns
Sometimes i'm not accurate enough. I'll gladly take any form of support for specific areas (especially non-french ones). Remember these rules for the towns :
► Too close towns will blob and fuse their population and be named after the bigger one
► If applicable we count the surrounding area of the surrounding urban area.
► <45k pop towns will be ignored, or blobbed up in case of the two previous rule
► From ~45k to ~150k pop is a Town
► From ~150k to ~300k is a Large Town
► Above ~300k is a Metropolis
► In case of a French town being also part of an other country, it will belong to the region and will blob up all of the population.
► Too small towns even blobbed up would be ignored
► Trees in area which are in real life trees
► Crop land in area which are in real life very cultivated
► Roads linking together close enough towns
► Paved ground for Metropolis and blobbing up nearby towns

☼ Clichés
Are you a local from a specific region or country ? I'm craving for this kind of stereotypes to create more themed units and events. It must be region-wide or known enough to be mentally linked to this : behavior, delicacy, event, history or even any kind of obvious rivalry.

Maybe you could somehow incorporate France's revolutionary spirit, something like a player could choose between different ideologies. eg Monarchy powerful elite units but bad "basic units", some more egalitarian army with better rounded units, an elite revolutionary army or some kind of commune militia system where you get units for free but have less control over recruitment (people choosing to take up arms in self defence rather than being coerced by an empire)

It's not the point of the game, it would have a different spirit. It's a cliché map, not a political one.

And peasants who go on strike every five minutes if a happiness counter goes too low.
I was thinking about a random strike event which reduce the income of all players for few minutes.

Or different strikes for different effects. Agricultural strikes reduce max food, hospital/school strikes cause slower HP/mana regen, the SNCF not being on strike for once causes accelerated movement, etc.

Brittany: A potion that temporarily grants immense strength and damage reduction, attacks cause knockback.

Normandy: Once-per-game NH Viking invasion, but once beaten gives them Viking special units.

You can see here that Normandy have two separate regions (High and low), and the Nord-pas-de-Calais baneer is pushed a bit because of image size (i added those on the image, not the map) ; also the Picardy flag is also a bit off so it won't hide the other region picker.

The actual map isn't at all started, so no need to show it for now.

There's 2 regions left to make : Poitou-Charentes and Aquitany.
For units, that's an other story, there's still a lot of research to do before.

Some of those buildings (Cities? Territories?) seem very crowded (esp montpellier) and some areas very open/sparse. Controversial opinion but perhaps "relax" the placement of cities allowing for better gameplay and avoid crowding.

Have you tested it yet with like place holder units, just to point out any "obvious" imbalances from the map, often in risk type games people at the side with only 1 border to defend do much better than those nearer the centre.

Looks like an ambitious and fun project, look forward to seeing more.

Indeed. Every ~100 000 inhabitants settlements are represented, some regions have a lack of starting towns so i cheated a bit by adding some 30k-90k eheheh.
Small regions would have better positioning and units. Centers have better income, but everyone wants a piece of it. Remember that non-core towns gives 4x less income !
 
It's still advancing. Regions are getting filled up. An alpha might be created soon.

Yet another great project by ghostofpast.
I hope it keeps going smoothly.
(many regions gets drunks but for some reason drunks are not a France wide standard unit(despite drunkenness being a common thing ))

The Flag system broke off, so i'm fixing it.
Color commands are on the way, as well as alliances and war commands.
I updated the region and town map, i may do hotfixes if i did forget some towns.
The map is still playable, just a bit broken on balance and side systems, so until then no Alpha 2.
