Animate added parts of a model

There are many ways for this. The problem is that most of them require some background knowledge in modelling and animating. I'll give you the recipe for a simple, yet quite effective way for making this.

So here is the way to go:

Needed programs:

  • Magos (a.k.a. Warcraft 3 Model Editor). This is the indespensable key program for modelling and a must have for everyone contemplating modelling.
  • Oinkerwinkle's Geoset Merger (also a must have unless you have Milkshape).
  • and last but not least, MDLVIS. A very usefull tool for finishing models and assigning vertices to the corresponding bones. It's also usefull for skinning and it also has an animating feature, but the anims made in MDLVIS are usually pretty bad

How to do it:
  1. open your faceless model with Magos and save it somewhere. The name of the model should be the same, but the ending should be changed to .mdl
  2. do the same thing with your tent model
  3. now open the faceless model in MDLVIS and press the F3 key.
  4. right next to the top menu you will see 3 clickable fields named "Bones", "Anims" and "Movement". Click on the field bones.
  5. There you must look in the right top menu for an object named "Bone_Chest". If you click onto it, it will automatically display some vertices in grey color and some other objects in yellow. These are the child nodes (objects that come after the Bone_Chest in the hierarchy and the vertices are those which are assigned to these child nodes.
  6. Just find a node to which you want to attach your object. Let's say, if you want to attach your tent to the chest, the corresponding bone is Object 12.
  7. don't do anything inside MDLVIS with your model atm. Just open the Geoset Merger.
  8. In the field "Base Model" (of the geoset merger) put the Faceless One. In the field "Geoset" the tent and name the outcoming model as you want.
  9. Before clicking onto "Merge", open up the menu at the bottom of the geoset merger and look for Object 12. Once found, just left click on it and then click on "Merge".
  10. Now open your model with Magos again and make the tent use the proper skin(s) and you're done! The tent is now attached to the faceless one and it will have the same anims as the chest bone, i.e. it doesn't need extra animation.
  11. If, for some reason you want it to be differently animated, then you must create a new bone in the faceless one's skeleton, attach the tent to this bone and either animate the bone manually in MDLVIS or with Oinkerwinkle's Redistribut Key program. Both of these methods are complicated and timeconsuming and not recommended for new modelers. Also the time and effort of this re-animation method is quite a hassle.

Also if you want to attach the tent to the Faceless's head, you must attach it to the corresponding bone (i.e. not to Object 12).

Thanx for the wonderful explanation my friend. I did all the steps and it works but the animation that the tent got are the animation of the chest of the faceless one. I want the tent attached to the faceless one chest to get the same animation of the war3 tent model. I want when the faceless plays his stand animation the tent plays its stand animation, when the the faceless plays his attack or spell animation the tent plays its attack animation and when the faceless plays his death animation the tent plays its death animation ( tent's animations not the faceless chest animation). I know u talked about this in -11.- can u please show me how to do this?
