[General] A third valuable asset besides Gold & Lumber

I had played around with this idea sometime ago. But I no longer have access to those maps, what is a good way to introduce a third asset into the game, say crystals. The idea is to have crystals required for the strongest or rarest units. Has anyone had any similar experience with a third asset? Please share your thoughts.
