A question about wards

So, when a Troll Witch Doctor places a ward on the ground. Does that ward basically work on its own or is the caster required to imbue it with some sort of magic?
I am asking because in my maps I'm making it so when a caster dies, all of its summons die alongside it. I've been wondering if the wards of a caster should die when the caster dies or if they should stay alive.

In my head, I've always imagined that they are imbued with all the magic they need at the start--but it is finite (which is why they only last so long). But they are pretty much autonomous after that, so the caster can go around and do other things.

So personally, I think they should stay alive even if the caster dies. But I could see either one being justifiable, so whatever works best for your gameplay. :)

I'm so rusty with my lore and what I knew might have been invalidated by retcons anyway.

If we're talking non-divine magic I think magic is a part of the world itself, the caster is not the source of the magic they just know how to control it to some extent. So my semi-educated guess would be that an imbued/enchanted item would be functional still.
