I got a great idea for an rpg npc system! how does this sound:
when you approach an npc you will gain shared control of them (they won't be able to walk). they will have the converse ability to talk to them, be able to sell items and information, and you can hire them to join your party. each unit will have a randomly generated 3 digit custom value. the first digit will be prejudices, so maybe one wouldn't want to join an undead guy. second digit would be personality, like "greedy" or "honorable". greedy people might stop fighting to pick up some gold in the middle of a battle, but will be good at sniffing out hidden gold caches.
third digit would be fighting technique. a vengeful person will stop attacking one guy to attack an enemy that's attacking him, and an assasin will always go after someone weaker than him.
also, though they cannot be ressurected, but they can gain levels, so if someone is in your party long enough, they will get pretty strong. is this a good idea? I'm taking suggestions for personality types...
