Review - Fel Pit v1.0
(Version May 21st 2025)
Synopsis: Fel Pit is a melee map for two players, featuring the Felwoods tileset, which has been beautifully transformed into a fel-corrupted wasteland. The diagonally mirrored map looks aesthetically stunning, without sacrificing visual clarity or gameplay quality. The fiery landscape offers a lot of room to play around with, yet the expansion gold mines towards the middle of the map are important strategic objectives waiting to be contested.
Map Aesthetics: Very beautiful terrain work with amazing tile usage. Amazing. Props and tiles have been used in good synergy, without neglect of minor details and environmental storytelling (for example, eggs near the scorpion creep camp). The map has a few unusual and a bit unclear features: the waterfall river and custom-made cliffs, but I'd deem them to have a minor, if an,y negative impact on playability as they are very distinct features. Overall, a very strong job on visuals. Good job.
Map Layout: The diagonal mirroring is nice to see as it is not as apparent form of mirroring (visually). The map looks to be balanced and properly mirrored. The central areas are very open (perhaps overly so). The top-left expansion gold mine is perhaps the most valuable objective, and it (together with the other expansion sites) has so limited build-space available leaves them quite exposed to enemy harassment. An aspect that would be nice to see is to implement cliff-level to the custom cliffs through usage of ramps: most important custom cliffs are in the corners of the map, and thus you could hide the actual cliffs by usage of ramps - this way players could still utilize the natural evasion chance, while also gaining sight advantage, without changing the visual look of the environment.
Neutral Objectives: Creep camps look very fitting for the map, and the item drops and strength levels of the camps look appropriate. Special mention to attention to detail. Good job. I do wonder if the neutral objectives are attractive enough to contest, and bringing the third gold mine towards the map center could enhance this impact. Nevertheless, good job.
Map Gameplay: A quality map for two players who enjoy one-on-one skirmishes. Some custom flavor is brought by hand-crafted terrain features, while the rest of the map looks stunning.

More people should take advantage of the "Unit Skin" stuff to make creeps in melee maps cooler, I love this kind of stuff! The map itself is beautiful too, gotta love some fel!

I'm sorry for the delayed response. Thank you very much for the review!

I know that for the contest there were similar criticisms for the center being too open, and that I over utilized the Poison tile.

I will certainly try to make use of cliff hills on future maps, that might be to much to redo on this map at the moment.

My hope is to try to bring some non-standard tile-sets to the forefront in competitive play. What I have cooking next is a Darkshore inspired map, with the Dalaran Ruins tile-set. Otherwise, I will be hitting the Dungeon Tile-set again and I would like to do a proper Barrens map too.

This map looks amazing! Love the art style and bold choices in tile set and creep camps. Having the fountain of health be so heavily guarded is a great idea as it changes the game dynamics so much once it es available. Here it will first be crept late, and it is risky to do so. Also, I would love to see competitive play on a map with a Dragon Roost.

Thank you MapNoob! Fel Pit certainly has its charm, and there have been some additional revisions done for competitive play that I should really get to updating on here with. Unfortunately the main problem players had was the amount of Poison Tile from the Felwood tileset, and some of the overly strong creep camps.

When you say players had a problem with the poison tile, was that just an aesthetic thing, where they felt you went a bit overboard, or is something more functional? I haven't really studied it in depth, I just like that it stands out compared to a lot of the standard maps I see on w3c, and I like that that the fountain of health is well guarded as it such a significant neutral building. Also I think I prefer only having one ftoh compared to the two on concealed hill, as it makes it point of contention and a more risky spot to creep.

I would love to see the revised, more competitive version. Also do you have any other competitive 1v1 maps with a dragon roost on it, as I would really love to see such a map on the competitive level, as I believe it could add a lot variety if it could be included in a balanced and fun way. Maybe you even have some thoughts on that?

Sorry it's been a while, I had a lot of irl things happen. I have since made a comeback to the WC3 scene. I have updated the map with the current look and creeps. If you have not seen it already, the map was features on Yumiko's Arena Tournament. I am currently rebalancing the map for better competitive play from what was seen in the tournament.

The players had felt I went overboard with the poison tile everywhere, and really wanted to have additional grass tiles.

We found until Blizzard addresses the balance of the Dragon Roost, it isn't advisable for a 1v1 map. It will certainly set a timer for the game, for whoever is able to get the Level 6 Drake and Level 10 Dragon, as both of these creeps are powerful.
