I have noticed that the server starts getting laggy at 11:04am GMT+1. If we try to load a page, it won't load.
After a minute or two, the site starts returning the message "Server too busy. Come back later" message. I have noticed this happening at 11:04 twice. May be a coincidence, but I thought I should report.

What could be causing this?

THW NOOBS!

Just kidding... But, I think thats the time the server sends THOUSANDS times THOUSANDS of emails about user's subscribed thread... So, it means that its really just very busy sending a thousand of megabytes of emails to everyone...

The slowdown seems to be caused by the large number of account activation reminder emails that are sent out at 11:03. I'll talk with Ralle and see if we can come up with a solution.

No. You spoke about sending e-mails about users' subscribed threads. Technically it's (nearly) the same, yes, but could you stop spamming? Just because we don't reply to your posts doesn't mean we don't read them.

Rui is correct: It's not the same. Emails sent about user subscribed threads use a queue that prevents too many of them from being sent at once. On the other hand, Activation Reminder emails bypass the queue and are sent directly in large batches.

Could that be why my automated birthday email came three days late? :p (Not that there's a problem with that; I found it quite funny actually)

Three other forums got it on the day, but they aren't as active as hive so that might've been why.
