For more color variety and shape dynamics try to make your icons in basic size of 1200x1200 and then resize to 64x64 before making them icons. This one misses dynamics and looks too abstract.

I've focused on the background as suggested and I hope I've succeeded.
I tried to add particles to make the spell more vivid in addition to the brightness in different shades,
also I hope the color scheme is pleasing.
As always, let me know if more changes are required.

Try this tutorial, and make the background dynamic. Current flat color is unacceptable. Add color variety and special effects. You can do it much better.
