After doing a quick browse of the forum, I noticed there wasn't really a direct discussion about it. Even if there was, there really isn't a point in reviving an old topic.

So to sum: which hero from every race do you favor the most? One that either appeals to you, or have the best hand with. Just as an extra you can include the mercenaries.

Humans:

The Paladin. Obviously I don't start with him first, but he makes a brill support in later game. The holy-warrior thing is also very cool.

Orcish Horde:

The Shadow Hunter. Finally the Orcs get a decent support hero. Besides the quirky Jamaican accent, this guy can really assist an opposition for the long run.

Night Elves:

The Warden. When you get the abundance of mana, her constant use of spells can really turn the tide. Overall a really cool concept and character.

Undead:

The Lich. Simply put, I just love the character overall. I use him as my first hero, which takes some precision. Although I must say the Krypt Lord is a close second.

Mercenary:

While the Fire Lord is badass, I'm going with the Dark Archer. Her Charm ability is a huge life saver at some points.

Human: Paladin
Resurrection is a late game life saver, and the combination of Holy Light and Devotion Aura are nice support early-mid game.

Orc: Blademaster
Wind Walk harass has won several games for me, it's surprising how little players were able to defend against that a few years ago.

Undead: Crypt Lord

Once you have a graveyard, his beetles help a lot considering the low amount of units you'll have early game.

Night Elf: Demon Hunter
I'd prefer other heroes early game, but Metamorphosis is too powerful to give up.

Neutral: Dark Ranger

Black Arrow is nice early game, and charm is pretty useful late game.

What do you guys mean by Nerubian Lord?

Mountain King:
In early game, his Storm Bolt is meerly used as a way to damage a hero or kill an enemy unit fast, but in lategame, its used to quickly and instantly stop those "evil" channeling spells like Big Bad Voodoo and Stampede. Avatar + Thunder Clap is nice aswell once you get there

Shadow Shaman:
His Healing Wave can save some battles in the early game and can combine that with Serpent Wards to enforce your attack or your creeping. Big Bad Voodoo is just a spell you dont want to be without if you have a big army(or if your teammates have). Hex to interupt those channels can be quite nice aswell.

Death Knight:
Death Coil in early game for creeping and healings units and then Unholy Aura and Animate Dead for lategame, boosting your units(and your enemies dead units) movement speed by a nice amount can really help sometimes.

Keeper of the Grove:
Even though Warden is awesome, the Entangling Roots and Thorns Aura make many of the battles that much easier, especially when Tranquility is learned.

Human: Archmage, elemental is easy to use and at level 3 realy owns, like the paladin too, devotion arua is great for melle based rushes.

Orc: Farseer, again I like the summons and chain lighting is nice.

Night elf: Preistess of the moon, realy easy to use but weak early on, a must if your going ranged, combined with a set of upgraded archers and trueshot arua she is lethal vs heros.

Undead: Never play undead

Merc: Dark ranger, like the concept and her silence is so good when the enemy whips out the spell casters especialy necs, also good for finishing off heros when you don't want them casting any escape spells.

This is the order I train them in-

Human:

1. Mountain King/Archmage (interchangeable depending on what units I get)
2. Tavern - Tinker (only for long running games)

Orc:

1. Blademaster/Tauren Chieftain (interchangeable depending on what units I get)
2. Blademaster/Tauren Chieftain (interchangeable depending on what hero I got last)
3. Tavern - Naga Sea Witch (only for long running games)

Night Elf:

1. Priestess of the Moon/Keeper of the Grove (interchangeable depending on what units I get)
2. Priestess of the Moon/Keeper of the Grove (interchangeable depending on what hero I got last)

Undead:

1. Lich
2. Tavern - Dark Ranger
3. Death Knight (only for long running games)

Tavern: (from best to worst)

1. Dark Ranger
2. Naga Sea Witch
3. Tinker
4. Brewmaster
5. Beastmaster (5/6 switch in late game...)
6. Firelord (5/6 switch in late game...)
7. Pit Lord
8. Alchemist

Alliance
Paladin- His healing ability is quite an advantage for the beginning of a game.

Horde
Blademaster- He's just cool except his voice can be annoying which is why I use Grom on my maps instead.

Undead
DeathKnight- He just looks cool and his death coil ability is great for killing runaway heroes or units.

Nightelves
Demon Hunter- He's the only good melee that the Night Elves have; he does all the dirty work while the elven women behind him fire arrows.

Mercenarys
Beastmaster/Firelord- I like him because its a two for one deal with his bear Misha and as for the Firelord, I just like all his abilities.

Well, thats only if your doing a hero rush that you would not start with the Paladin. The Archmage would be best to start with for a rush because of his summon ability. Another two for one deal.

Don't really play melee, so I have kind of different criteria on what makes a hero good, mostly if its good for killing other heroes they're a winner, but general coolness also adds.

Human - Blood Mage
Self-sustainable fire and shadow magician? <3

Orc - Far Seer
I just like the shaman type, and the Shadow Hunter doesn't seem like a shaman as much.
Also wolves are just awesome.

Night Elf - Keeper of the Grove
He'll stick you to the ground and put his mighty tiny ents at you while healing them with tranquility. Also, you take damage if you touch him with a melee unit. Win-win!

Undead - Crypt Lord
He is the meat shield of Wc3, since I play a lot of bosskilling maps where you have a tank, I've learnt to love durable heroes, and this guy heals himself with Locust Swarm, has lots of armor and melee units take damage when they hit him. And if that wasn't enough, he can do Impale and summon beetles.

Tavern - Pit Lord
Another durable hero, not as much armor as just straight hp, but in addition he has great abilities for killing masses of units, and his Howl of Terror makes sure no melee unit can kill him anyway.

Humans
Paladin - I cant play humans for shit, so i always do a Pally with Holy Light + Footmen rush.
Orcs - Blademaster
Undead - Deathknight/Dreadlord Deathknight for his Death Coil/Aura as well as late game resurrection, and Dreadlord for his Vampirism Aura, and the Carrion Swarm. Inferno is nice too.
Night Elf - Never played as em.
Neutral - Pandaren! Nice tank, and his ulti is nice for both offensive and defensive tactics. Can deal pretty high damage and has evasion.

Human : Bloodmage

Flame strike is quite good at low levels, and Phoenix can be amazing (if used correctly).

Orc : Far Seer

Knowing the battlefield, and the location of your enemy, is essential (far sight). You can't complain with summons and a moderate area attack spell, either.

Night Elf : Warden

They have a great set of spells; a damage over time, an area attack, and a teleport.

Undead : Crypt Lord

Carrion Beetles is amazing at lower levels, and the area stun is quite useful. Crypt Lord makes a great tank, too, especially with his personal damage return.

Neutral : Firelord

Silencing enemy heroes is a godsend. The duplicating summon is pretty cool, too. Volcano causes a lot of collateral damage, but just tears apart enemy bases.

Human: Archmage
His Blizzard is effective against buildings and walls of invisible units, if you don't have invisible detecting units. Summon Water Elemental is useful, especially at the beginning. Brilliance Aura helps if you use many spellcasters. Mass Teleport helps you when you are outnumbered and you can't flee.
Orcs: Far Seer
Chain Lighting pwns! Effecitve against many low HP units. Far Sight is a very effective scout spell that can show invisible units. Feral Spirit is, as Summon Water Elemental, most effective at early game. Earthquake burns and destroys everything on it's way.

Humans:

The Mountain King
is the ass-kicking tank. I love his attitude and skills, not to mention his Strength.

Orcish Horde:

What I love with Blademaster is his Stealth, Speed and Tactical. He's like the Orcish Ninja and is very effective in Maneuvers which is my very tactic.

Night Elves:

Demon Hunter is Very Tactical when used properly, just like what I said with the Blademaster. But this time, he's an Elven Ninja.

Undead:

The Lich is very awesome, nuff said.

Mercenary:

I like Pandaren Brewmaster because I like Pandas. And alcoholic drinks.
