the other day i got out my old win 98 machine to play fallout 2...
it was all fine and perfect until i noticed that it was slow when it booted... so thats when i fine tuned it...
i ran msconfig and turned off a few things that run on startup... one being avast and avast websearcher and i also turned off quicktime...

after i rebooted my pc now tells me that my windows configuration file is corrupt and i should insert the windows 98 cd... which i dont have...

any sugestions?

+rep if you help

You must have accidentally turned off a vital Win98 file. What you can do is to use a Linux Live CD to back up your files, or use Autoruns to check your computer for infections, errors etc. Have you tried booting in safe mode? I found this way to recover your registry from safe mode (it's in greek for me, but I think that this page scans for your location and adjusts the language accordingly).
