What's with picture formats?!

Ussually I was uploading my pictures into my album in BMP format, but not so long time ago I was unable to do that and had to change it to JPG.
Also when I today tryed to customize my profile and add a background (In JPG format), I was unable to do so...

So the question is: what's with picture formats and how can I make my background for my profile now?!

Use the .PNG format.
