What is the point of "Imported Files"?

I believe that is when you use AI. Its for the unit data so the custom AI you make uses the same unit from one map to another. I.E you make a custom unit called Levdragon. You make a custom AI for Levdragon so the unit Levdragon walks around the map attacking everything in its way. If you want to use the AI in another map you have export the Levdragon unit data and import it to any map you use, I THINK! Correct me if I'm wrong anyone.

It is indeed a simple way to import files for all maps in the campaign. And it works. The only difference is that the prefix of the file path ir war3campImported\

That's the idea.

If you e.g. have a hero which is used in the whole campaign you would need to import the model in every map (and create the unit and so on...)

That's why the campaign editor has an own object editor and import..
