Rect is not a region, but GUI calls rects regions because it is retarded.
Basically, what you thought was a region, is actually rect.

Okay  Thanks for the deeper explanetion... As I aint JASS'er I amm happy that I knew the right answear.

You place them in map... There is a menu for them in the toolbar... click R for an easy switch to them.

A region is, let's say... a place. You can add a specific point to a region, or you can add the area occupied by a rect.
Another downside of GUI: you can't store the actual regions. I think it leaks 2 times on the A Unit enters <rect> event. One of those leaks is necessary (not making it a leak exactly, I know), the other is not. You have to keep the region to allow the event to work.

In WEU you can see that there are both rects and regions.

= you dont have to get the latest version of the world editor... you just need to understand JASS. As Rui so clearly said

btw: Rui long time no see..

So again just make regions random places, like you normally make regions to get the gates to work.
