FF8 was best for a few reasons

1. was the 1st ff i played
2. the plot is fantastic
3. better than ff7 and ff3 (japan-5 US?? first ff released in US) because of graphics
4. better than ff9 and 10 because of plot

ultimatly ff3/5 had the best plot. but because it was nes it was let down by graphics. the other great RPG was chronotrigger which was great.

i think the FF7 graphics was the only thing letting it down. also some of the weirder stuff toward the end i didnt like, but overall the plot was good.

oh also i liked the side quests on FF7 but i prefered those on FF8. i am a big side quest player and i like 100% completion. i didnt like how on FF7 there are non-compulsory characters, because if you miss those character you are missing a large bit of plot which sucks.

Chronotrigger > Every game ever made.

I mean, come on, Chronotrigger is THE best game of all time, with The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time running a close second.

lol it's difficult to find good RPG's around anymore. I hear they're making a remake of FF8 for PS3 which will supposedly fix up bugs, improve graphics and not sure if it will add stuff...But i've only played FFX and FFX-2.

indeed, I love fantasy RPG's as well. What I don't get is people who worship Fable. I mean, sure, it was a decent game, but it was short, and it didn't really live up to the expectations that people had for it. There were side quests enough, and lots of things to do, but they made the game so that you were usually trying to do a story quest and at the rate the game progresses you just don't have enough time to properly explore and take in the whole game. The side quests were decent, and the customizability of the character was good as well (hair, tatoos, name etc), but Peter Molyneaux (spelling?) has set a standard for his games that people expect.

BTW I hated Pazaak from the start. I generally ignore it. The thing I liked about the kotor side-quests though was that if you did enough of them, the actually advanced the story in some way. Fr example, if you pester Canderous enough, and you are on tatooine at that point, he will meet one of his mandalorian buddies and they will fight, Canderous of course pwns the crap out of the dude, but thats besides the point :p Also, in kotor 2, if you pursue the side quests enough, you can make most of your non jedi party members jedi, aside from Mandalore aka Canderous of course, he doesn't need to be a jedi to pwn. All of the secrets are good too, especially in RPGs since there are so many places to hide them. If you look closely, you can find many relics of the main character from kotor (who's name wont be revealed incase of spoiling it) within kotor 2, and you get this nostalgia, een when you see characters like carth, who in the first is horribly annoying, and you appreciate the fac that they brought him back. Everything aside, a good RPG IS hard to find, perhaps why people love them so much. If they are good, they are REALLY good. If not, they suck.

Good RPG's are not hard to find, just look at any of the FF's below =>8, It's a good sequel that's hard to find, which is why the FF games have nothing to do with each other besides re-using some names/motifs/etc.

Also, Chronotrigger > Every game ever made. Crappy graphics yes, but I don't play games for the graphics, I play them for the fun, and I've gone through the entire game 8 times, each time trying different things and each time I had a shitload of fun.

well, its awesome. but good rpgs are still hard to find. Final fantasy is a series of games. But in terms of anything not final fantasy kotor etc they are hard to find. Okay, put it this way: it's hard to find an excellent NEW rpg. By this I mean a whole new games. Think aout it, all of te hottest RPG's right now and in the past few years hae been sequels or continuations in a series. Either they can't come up with ideas like they used to, or it's incredibely hard breaking in to the RPG market. I think it's a bit of both.

of course, and through all of the crap every once in a while a new game will break through and people will love it. plenty of games have done it, and then that sets the game up to become a series, and thus more pwnage rpg's are born. it just takes that one RPG to break through to make more great RPG's.

If you like the FF genre and you dont care about the graphics I can advice you strongly to get the old PS1 (also sega) game Grandia. It has a fantastic story, is a large game and is a fun game to play all the way thru. Also the way the turns with attacking and stuff is running is much better than FF.

The game is hard to find though so you need to use some time trying to find it somewhere.

FF is a great series because it gets everything right, or nearly right. the graphics are getting better today so modern games dont have issue with them, and back in the day they were all the same (16bit) and so u never had any difference. the plots were always good and they had enough intrest to make you want to keep playing, random encounters or not. the combat was good and the turn based style adds stratergy while still having fast paced action instead of slash-a-thons like in oblivion(dont get me wrong they are still good). the mix of magic and summoning ruled and tis always different, you get oyur favourite summons everytime but also new ones. the characters were always different and werent always your popular kick ass hero (eg squal the loner), this gives them some personality and makes them more intresting. leveling up was always different, from the basic the more you kill the better you are to the crazy sphere grid. and finally the side quests and mini games always ruled.

i kinda see what brad is saying, most new rpgs suck (dues ex invisible war anyone? i think not....) but KOTOR, Elder Scrolls and FF are leading the way. try to name another good modern one, i cant think of any.
