Variable flexibility?

For the Campaign I'm working on, I need to know something about variables.

Can they carry more data over to the next level other then hero level, experience and skills?

Because I'd like to set up a few interesting things.

You can carry over almost (if not all) variable stored data from one map to another.

This is the one I normally use. I'm sure Hive have one (at least) as well.
