Just because you cant use it as a projectile doesnt mean you cant use this for spells...

Actually it can be used as a projectile. It's called the "instant" missile type.

Yes, it can be used as Instant projectile type, but whenever it shoots out, the smaller scaled units dies and the explosion happens 3-5 seconds later. It also depends on what is being attacked, if it a big scale monster you will see a huge explosion.
