This plot-hook or prologue I actually dreamt up. Only names I've added and a few inconsistencies I've repaired after awaking.

A few banded mercenary squads return to Earth from experimental colonies on far away planet Yaanec. Summarized report is, "The colonies were threatened by hostile natives, but the now heavilly reduced native population is no longer a threat. Albeit, only one colony is positively not too stunted to survive after whole episode." Many mercs who went did not return, and the reports from the rest all have a few things in common: It was a nightmare, and Yaanec is grotesquely alien, and becomes an even more hostile environment once disturbed - in many opinions not suited for colonization unless we expensively change the planet completely.

The merc veterans quickly become celebrities all over the globe: Every news channel wants fleshy details, and the mercs even brought mascots and relics from the battles on Yaanec: Live critters, rare materials, and native both everyday objects and artifacts! The findings draw plenty of scientific attention, and in time interesting discoveries will be made due to these. One merc veteran, however, lands in a mental institution after being deemed mentally unstable in court for the murder on a journalist. He is unstable, has violent panic attacks, and obsessive speech topics: Every time he gets really trippy, he shouts something like: "UN must send me on another mission to Yaanec! Otherwise we will not be able to stop what will come! UN must make this mission, before it is too late!!!"

The real deal first begins after UN sends troopers to Yaanec on explore/rescue/scavenge/diplomacy missions. This voyage has no connection to the crazy merc's ramblings, but nonetheless, he and other colony battle veterans are granted permission to come along. The protagonists are amongst these troopers and veterans. Investigation will reveal that what the last report concluded was terribly wrong: The native population is not heavilly reduced, and ZERO colonies survive.

The planet is very barren, and should have died long ago: There is no atmosphere, alas plenty of life. Most of the life forms are either bacterial or mineral - of biological principles never encountered before. The mineral life isn't life in the sense that it has DNA. The life is so extraordinary that the physically impossible on Earth is almost plain biology on Yaanec.
The planet's superior intelligent life form has colossal temples, dome- and arch-based architecture, and a technology capable of such things as teleportation. Their scientific and technological tradition has elements we normally associate with religion and the occult: They use fetishes and rituals and believe their devices to be magical. The religious symbolism of the natives has an uncanny linguistic and graphical resemblance to occult tradition on Earth. Coincidence?

Might it be of inspiration? Might there be critical opinions?
