I'm interested in starting to develop mods for starcraft instead of warcraft.
What is alike and what is different in the two editors?
What sort of things do i need to keep in mind using the galaxy editor?
Does the galaxy editor have the same issues with leaks as world editor?

Any general information that helps me get up to speed with galaxy editor faster is appreciated!

leaks are no big problem anymore. only thing leaking seem to be actors.
and here start the differences.
actors are everything related to visuals ingame : units, effects, beams, etc

a unit constists of a unit , an actor and a model. instead of one you have 3 things to work on. and that's the same with most other things compared to wc3 editor.
so everything takes more time but you have WAY more possibilties.

so data editor has huge additions.
terrain editor is nearly the same - some more additions
UI-editor allows to cusomize the Interface
if you were good with wc3 trigger editor sc2 triggers won't be a problem.
custom script is not needed at all (the only useful thing is to destroy triggers and being faster than using GUI)

World edit had no problems with leaks as far as I know. It was not particularly a real time editor so I doubt any mattered.

If you meant "Does StarCraft II have the same problems with leaks as Warcraft III" then no it does not, it has automatic garbage collection.
