might be easier to request the model. but i'm not sure. at any rate i might like to know the answer too...but afaik i think you need to shell out money for a program to make the models.
Milkshape 3D, GMAX, or if you have money, 3DS max would be really good... then you might want to have Magos Model Editor too and some photo editing program (Paint.net if you want free) or GIMP or Photoshop...
Free 3DS Max = GMax. MDLVis is good too. It has some graphical bugs but as soon as you're used to them, it's a great tool.
It all depends on what kind of model you want to make.
If you need special effects, Magos' Editor is the main tool. You should learn how W3 model format is by looking some of them in your mpq archives (or read tutorials).
If you need unit/building models, it'll be big work and time consuming anyway. I don't say it doesn't worth it but you should edit existing models or looking through Hive's models.
There are also Oink Winkle tools, but there are too many of them in my opinion. It's not really convenient.
I've looked into it so many times, there is no 3ds max available on that site... besides they would surely get into problems if they provide free downloads of a licensed software on their site...
though if you want to make more functional models from scratch, you would need 3D modeling tools like 3DS or GMAX or milkshape which is not available on the section
and learning 3DS can help you find a career in the future if you ever get good at it
