Hi, this may be a bit winded because i am trying my best to describe things that i do not understand clearly.

I have been tinkering with a map -well, just via Object Editor, Region layers, & triggers.

Yesterday i started noticing three strange (to me) issues.

The first, i kind of chuckled at, because i heard about it way back in 2003. Apparently, when a non-hero unit with hero inventory touches a Orb of Lightning(new) it causes instant death! I had never actually seen it before, but it does happen! So, not knowing a better solution to the problem, i just replaced that item with a custom equivalent. -Good enough for the girls i go out with! ;)

Next, i started noticing something with me hero's sidekick unit. From time to time, his cursor/pointer for AoE spells disappears (Devour Magic, specifically). It also prevents him from using targeted spells -any of them. If i destroy the unit & re-summon him, he is fine again. But it sure would be nice to understand what is causing it in the first place.

Finally -slow motion effect! The hero & sidekick start moving in slow motion, as if caught in a slow aura -but show no buff. I didn't use any slows as their ability bases. Their combat is all the same -it is just the movement that is changed. Scratching my head on this one too! ;)

Did i just save and load a map too many times or...

Any ideas?

TY for reading :)

And... sorry if i am asking too many questions... you guys are great!

I don't know the first one.
Second one: Some spells cannot be used as base abilities for items. Simple is that, you have to find others that work properly.
Slow motion: Game mechanic - You can use "-" or "+" in your keyboard to increase/decrease game speed.

For the AoE targetting problem, does your map have a lot of cliff height variation?
I noticed maps that have greatly lowered areas sometimes act strangely with area targeted abilities.

Ok. First off... TY all for replying! :)

@Unregret: ? i was not doing anything with items. I had a non-hero sidekick for a unit that had a hero inventory which led to a few complications, but the targeting problem was something else.

@LoveSeeker: ? Were you there watching my game? ;) Come on now! How new do you think i am? I may be an idiot when it comes to the editor... but even i know how to toggle formation movement on & off! But that was not the problem. TY for being creative though! ;)

@Wark it was more than just an aoe targeting problem -it was all targeting. In fact, it quickly degenerated after i started this thread. My custom units started disappearing. Imported models no longer became veiwable. The object editor stopped letting me access certain units. I saved what work i could onto a new map -mostly triggers & . custom spells. The units & models had gone so corrupt i didn't dare try to export them. Not sure what happened, but the whole map just went to hell.

& the map i was using: Emerald Gardens 12 player expansion. I like that one because it has better mercenary camps & creep groups than most Blizzard maps. I enjoy monopolizing the Green Dragon Roost in the central plateau. But for your question, no, i would say it's pretty flat as far as maps go.

So, TY guys for offering ideas, but it seems to have been a lot bigger than just a targeting bug, the entire map went bad.

Ahh, it is sad to hear that your map is corrupted. One question, may I know which editor do you use? I heard WEU is buggy so I think you use JNGP or SharpCraft World Editor.

Also, about the movement speed problem, have you tried your hero and sidekick unit(I think you meant summoned units) in new map? Sorry if I made you rage or bother or anything else though :D

The problem isn't in the item. The item ability does it. Recently I used a triggered spell to add the ability based on the lightning orb one. It causes death after removing the ability.

@Love Seeker: lol, no, you didn't make me rage. I was just wondering if they had legalized marijuana where you live too? ;)

I just use the regular World Editor that came with the game.

@Fruit Forest: yes, i think that is more accurate. I realize now, in my language i was describing it as an "item", but actually, it was the "Orb of Lightning(new)" ability. I frequently get items & item abilities confused with each other but... well, the way they are labeled, it is easy to do! ;) But, like i said, i replaced the new version with the old version of the ability & adjusted the numbers a bit & didn't have anymore trouble with it -unless that was where my map disintegration started. But i will probably never know the answer to that one. ;)

@All well, it has been a few days.

I have learned a couple of tidbits.

Bug #1: even if you add the "hero" ability from the units list (which oddly is not actually viewable in the abilities list), & designate the unit a hero via trigger: it is still instant death if he comes in contact with an item that has "Orb of Lightning (new)" ability. This is one of those bugs that just "is".

Bug #2: i still don't know exactly what happened there, but i have found something worth mentioning. One easy way to break unit targeting in a fashion like i was describing is to have triggers that raise an ability to a level that does not exist. Like for example, you have three levels possible for Bloodlust, and your trigger keeps firing a "set current ability to level of current ability +1" beyond 3, it will break the targeting. I think it's possible that this is what was happening. I may have set up an ability leveling trigger that under certain circumstances pushed the ability levels past its designated limits.

Bug #3: i still don't know. I imported a lot of models onto that map, and maybe something just wasn't compatible. Just a head scratching guess though. ;)
